I was pleased to have this piece on a quite specific area of university governance published by HEPI. The article, which I wrote together with Smita Jamdar, Partner and Head of Education at Shakespeare Martineau, covers the thorny issue of governor remuneration.

It notes that the Office for Students seems to be considering allocating more responsibilities to chairs of governing bodies and the there is now something of a different regulatory mood in relation to governance matters. In this environment it is perhaps unsurprising perhaps that there is fresh talk about the issue of governor remuneration.

The article then explores the issue of governor payment and suggest that not only is it unlikely to solve other governance challenges, but risks creating new ones. Moreover, spending any length of time debating the issue represents a seriouss distraction from the real business of governing an institution.

Thank you to HEPI for publishing it.
