Over the years I’ve noted the release of many different league tables, UK and international, some of them daft, some attempting to be more serious, all of them dubious in one way or another. One of the rankings, which has been an ever-present feature of the league table scene for 14 years now, has been largely ignored by many. CWUR, the Centre for World University Rankings, is an organization based in Saudi Arabia and claims to be:
the only academic ranking of global universities that assesses the quality of education, employability, quality of faculty, and research without relying on surveys and university data submissions.

They offer consultancy services too of course and have expanded the offer since its launch in response to its popularity apparently and has been expanded following major demand. It now claims to be the largest academic ranking of global universities.
It’s fair to say that it is not one of the rankings that hits the HE headlines in the UK very often. This is possibly because there have only ever been two British universities in the top 10 since 2012. It’s not too difficult to guess which they might be but the information that Cambridge and Oxford are the two leading UK institutions is not exactly big news.
CWUR then, in addition to its other claims, is extremely consistent. Unlike all those other rankers, who like to tweak the criteria every year to mix things up, CWUR’s top 10 looks remarkably similar from year to year. Let’s look at the latest league table:
2026 CWUR ranking

1. Harvard University
2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
3. Stanford University
4. University of Cambridge
5. University of Oxford
6. Princeton University
7. University of Pennsylvania
8. Columbia University
9. Yale University
10. University of Chicago
Compare this with the very first published league table from 2012:
1. Harvard University
2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
3. Stanford University
4. University of Cambridge
5. Caltech
6. Princeton University
7. University of Oxford
8. Yale University
9. Columbia University
10. Berekeley
The top four universities are unchanged since 2012 and the top five has been the same since 2014. Rock solid consistency.
In addition to those in the 2026 top 10 only three other universities have appeared in this list since the inception of the ranking in 2012: Cornell, Caltech and Berkeley.

CWUR’s full ranking comprises 2,000 institutions rated from a total of over 21,000 around the world. Things are undoubtedly a little more volatile further down the rankings but the consistency at the top is notable. And, to be honest, a bit dull.
While this consistency is a strength methodologically, and CWUR does deserve some credit for not trying to spice things up every year, it does rather make this a league table which no-one is going to get excited about.
